| Manchester City Council: £1.5m to remove virus |
| Details have begun to emerge of the huge clean-up operation that faced Manchester City Council when they were struck by the Conficker virus in February this year. |
| Believed to be the biggest computer virus infection since the SQL Slammer worm wreaked havok across the internet in 2003, Conficker spread rapidly across the world wide web in late 2008 causing an estimated $9.5bn in damage along the way. |
Manchester City Council’s case provides an interesting insight into exactly how costs can mount up. The £1.5m bill outlined in their report published last month (click here) includes £600,000 of external consultancy costs required to repair systems and £68,000 of lost revenue – both of which would have been insurable under our new C&P policy. |
